Joined the Government after a doctorate in Materials Science, and has worked in policy areas including support for the UK manufacturing sector, Scottish electricity subsidies, energy sector regulation, and Government finance.

Ran the office of Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks during the development of the 2007 Energy White Paper, and subsequently the office of the Science Minister during the creation of the short-lived Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills.

After a stint heading up Energy Technology Strategy work at the Department of Energy and Climate Change (where he worked on support for demonstration and deployment of new & innovative energy technologies), he was appointed head of wind business development, with a mission to develop the UK’s wind energy sector, in April 2009.
